Chris' mIRC Help Page

Welcome to my attempt at a mIRC help page.
Intro to IRC
Well if your here you must know what IRC and mIRC is. If you don't, I'll tell you!
IRC - Internet Relay Chat is a bunch of servers hooked up, and these servers form a "net." There are people that connect to these servers for fun and chat. Since there are so many servers, people started making new "nets." The big 3 nets right now are EFnet, DALnet, and Undernet. Each net has alot of channels and alot of users!
I think Undernet is the best, since that's the only one I'm on :). I hope you can find whatever else you need on these pages.
Now I know IRC, but what is mIRC?
Well mIRC is the nest IRC client or program for IRC. Ask anyone on Windows and they'll tell you mIRC rules. A few things that mIRC has is popups, remote control, and aliases. When you are an expert these are the only things you will ever need! OK, lets explain what each of these parts does in mIRC.
Popups - These are shortcuts you can take to do just about anything. Like join channels, change your nick, say things, AND kick, ban, and op people. I'll explain how to start you up in the next section.
Remote Control - This section of mIRC is used to respond to events or commands that other people use on you. Remote can do anything from auto op people, respond to messages, and ANYTHING at all you tell it to!
Aliases - Makes things easier. Aliases save you alot of time! Aliases can be used as shortcuts to say messages, join channels, and AGAIN, anything you tell them to! And you can even use aliases with the F-1 to F-12 keys!
OK Now I have mIRC! How do I work this thing?
OK, first you have to connect to a server. A few are:
us.undernet.org - The main US Undernet server.
irc.eskimo.com - Main EFnet US server.
irc.dal.net - The main DALnet server.
When you fill in a server and the rest of the mIRC setup, you can connect to that server. You can use icons for most things. I love them because it makes things easier. Just click on the first icon from the top-left to connect to a server.
Now you're on IRC and you can talk in channels. The first thing you should do is list the channels. There is an icon for that too. Its one of them at the top, look for it! Now when you're done, just double-click on a channel name to join it.
Now there are some people to talk to! You might notice that some people have a @ beside their name. They aren't different, they just have power, or OPS in that channel. If you want to start typing, just type in your text and push enter, its very simple!
Now you might want to do some other things, like join another channel, or change your nick(name), to do these you can type them in any window and the command will happen. And remember, ALL commands start with a /(front slash).
Let's say you wanted to join a channel named #PRIMUS, then you would type /join #PRIMUS, this command would bring you into the channel names #PRIMUS.
If you want to change nicks, then you would type /nick newnick. If my current nick was bob and I wanted to be MrBob then I would type /nick MrBob.
Well that's about all you need to know to start yourself into mIRC. There are MANY, I mean MANY more commands, so get ready! :)
OK I heard about these OPS, what can they do?
Well OPS have all the power in a channel. They can kick, ban, and op or deop others. OK a kick is just when they kick you out of a channel, you can still re-join later. A ban is when the op doesnt let you into that channel, you cant re-enter until they unban you from that channel! So be nice and don't bug those ops! Thats about all they can do, but that's quite a bit!
How do I get ops in a channel?
Well I don't know! It depends on the channel that you are in! Here are a few general rules on how to get ops in a channel:
- Never beg for ops. This will most likely get you kicked.
- Try to be a regular on that channel. The more people you know, the better.
- Don't make fun of the ops moms, they usually don't like that :)
- Don't be a lamer, like don't bug people and stuff.
You should ask the ops on the channel you want to op in on how to become an op.
Well is that all there is to mIRC?
No, No! There are many more things you need to learn to do. I will try to make pages for all of these later in time, right now settle for this. A few things you can also do is make your own script, or bot, and play wav files (can be really fun!), and alot more things that I never do!
You must be wondering, what the hell is a bot? OK a bot is another script, that you can send commands to and let in know what to do in a specific channel. But usually bots monitor and keep channels up. They can auto-op people and do anything else they are told to do, they are helpful in a channel with alot of users!
Scripts are just the .ini part of the files. They contain the Remote, Aliases and Popups. You can configure these to your needs. Most people change around these because they use certain commands very much. And you can even let friends access your remote if you have it set up to do that.
Well if you want more info on scripts join #mircremote or #mircscripts.
For help on bots join #bots or #mircbot.
Conclusion (yeah you heard it)
Well to end this off I gotta say, mIRC rules windows, if you don't have it, get it, and if you don't got windows, get something else! This is all the basics, tho there is alot more to learn.
Make sure you check out ALL my other mIRC pages, once they are done! One day I will have a script of my own, maybe it like 2 years, so hold on tight, cuz when it does come out, it will rock everyone!
